How often do you arrive in a city and think, “I could live here”? While I love travelling to cities all over the world, there aren’t more than a handful that I walk around starting to dream of setting up a life there. In fact, I could name them all on one hand: Madrid, Berlin, Fukuoka and… Montevideo.

I don’t remember if it started on the bus into the city from Colonia del Sacramento. Or as we ate our lunch in the square and watched families and friends laughing and enjoying life. Or as we walked along La Rumbla as the sun set.

Maybe it was walking home after dinner, past groups of friends spilling out of bars and onto the footpaths as they caught up for drinks as the weekend started. It could have been walking through the palm lined paths of the park on a Sunday, as a late spring music festival got set up. But by the time we were walking home on our second day there, I was getting that feeling. That it felt like it could be home.

It’s a city of sunsets, it’s a city of beaches, it’s a city of street art. It’s full of friendly locals. And even in the rain, Montevideo is a city to walk around, with something interesting to catch your eye as you round each corner.

Before I went to Uruguay, everyone wanted to know “why are you going to Uruguay?” But the longer I spent there, the more I wanted to know, “why isn’t everyone going to Uruguay?”. And also, “how could I make Montevideo my home for a while?”.

I’ve been intrigued by Montevideo and Uruguay in general partially because of the country’s position as a seemingly peaceful and stable oasis amid a region that often sees political upheavals and revolutions. Your sunset photos definitely make me want to visit this city even more!
I’d highly recommend visiting Uruguay if you’re in South America, Bama! It’s overlooked by lots of travellers, but it’s really easy to get to from Argentina and Brazil, and as you mention, it’s very different to its neighbouring countries. It’s a beautiful country and has some fantastic sunsets.
Thanks Tali.
Great Photos. Love the buildings and their colours and the street art.
